All Doors Opened to Elishai Ezra:
Now, On a Direct Track to a Promising Academic Career

Prof. Hagit Messer-Yaron, President of Open University, warmly congratulates Elishai Ezra at recent graduation ceremony.
"I learned that because we are graduates of the Open University, we have some very distinct benefits that others envy."
Elishai Ezra
Elishai Ezra's first Open University undergraduate degree was in life sciences, a subject he chose because he relished a challenge within the scientific environment. All this he accomplished while doing his military service. Then, because a love of learning was so deeply embedded, as was his love for the Open University, he also decided to get a degree in philosophy.

Elishai freely admits that he had some preconceived notions about the Open University when he began his undergraduate studies – "perhaps graduates of the Open University would be considered less favorably than graduates of say the Technion or Hebrew University."

However, Elishai learned pretty quickly that, in fact, these notions were totally inaccurate. "I learned that because we are graduates of the Open University, we have some very distinct benefits that others envy. We have the ability to open a book, analyze a theory in depth, understand it and even formulate our own intelligent opinion without ever leaving our very comfortable corner in life."

Many of these abilities are cultivated over time. As Elishai began his intensive army service in one of Israel's most elite divisions while also commencing his undergraduate studies in life sciences at the Open University, he had to learn how to balance his very limited time 'off-base.' That meant learning how to crack open the books as soon as he came home, and finding time in his densely filled schedule to do the requisite laboratory work. Rather than 'resent' the need to carefully plan his time, Elishai learned to appreciate his growth in knowledge and relish a feeling of profound self-fulfillment.

Upon completion of his degree from the Open University, Elishai was accepted for graduate studies at every one of the twelve programs to which he applied. He selected the Hebrew University's School of Engineering and Computer Sciences under Dr. Yaakov Nahmias, from Harvard University, one of the world's leading bioengineering experts. Nahmias personally chose Elishai for this prestigious and select program.

Today Elishai is on a direct track for a doctorate in bio-engineering at the Hebrew University, which granted him a full scholarship, plus moneys for daily living expenses, based on his excellence at the Open University.

"Today, during my hours at the Hebrew University, I have the opportunity to share with colleagues sitting at MIT, Harvard Medical School and other prestigious laboratories and institutes around the world. I have learned in my discussions that there is no knowledge that the Open University has not been made accessible to us. I have also learned that graduates of the Open University have the talent and capability to meet any academic challenge."
