International workshop at the National Library of Israel
On June 17-19, 2024 the Israel National Science Foundation, in cooperation with the Open University of Israel, Yad Ben-Zvi, the World Union of Jewish Studies, the Open University's DHSS Hub , and the Salty Center for Ladino Studies at Bar-Ilan University, held a unique international research workshop at the National Library in Jerusalem.
The workshop was attended by researchers and students from Israel and France, Netherlands, Germany, Great Britain, Spain, and the United States, with researchers from other countries in the audience. The workshop dealt with broadsides since the beginning of Jewish printing. Such rare pages were printed on one page only, on one side or sometimes on both sides and have been neglected and have hardly received any attention by researchers until now. The first printed pages were calendars, and later regulations, songs, prayers, messages, amulets and more. This was the first convention of its kind dedicated to the study of Jewish broadsides. The "Jewish History" journal will publish a special issue based on the lectures at the workshop.
