The Open University of Israel continues to strengthen its global academic presence through its support of "Digging Deep: New Insights into the Medieval Mikveh in Cologne," an international conference held from February 10–13, 2025, in collaboration with MiQua. LVR-Jewish Museum in the Archaeological Quarter Cologne. This prestigious event brought together leading scholars, researchers, and students to explore new perspectives on the history, archaeology, and cultural significance of the medieval mikveh in Cologne, a remarkable historical site.
As part of its commitment to international collaboration and academic excellence, the Open University was well represented at the conference. Master’s students actively participated, presenting research posters, engaging in discussions, and joining field excursions. Their involvement was highly praised, highlighting the university's dedication to integrating emerging scholars into major academic events. In addition, PhD and postdoctoral researchers from the university contributed valuable insights to the conference discussions, reinforcing the institution's leadership in historical and archaeological research. One of the standout contributions was from Beni Zaks of the Open University’s Digital Innovations Studio, who showcased an interactive Virtual Reality 3D model of the Cologne Mikveh. Developed in collaboration with local archaeologists, this cutting-edge visualization became one of the event’s key highlights, demonstrating the university's pioneering role in digital heritage preservation.
