Stepping Up to University Studies "I realized that if I didn't start learning something, I would have no where to go," Israel recalls. With no psychometric or matriculation exams, Israel was not really sure where he could start learning. By chance he met with a counselor from the Open University, and was happily surprised to learn that all he had to do was sign up for a course. "The rest was up to me. So, I borrowed some money and signed up for a Gender Psychology course. I studied from morning till night. I liked it." Israel recalls. "I always felt," Israel continues,"that if I can get a university degree, something good can come of me." That one course, led to many more courses at the Open University and a new, enriched outlook on life. "After my first year of courses at the Open University, I sent a letter to the Dean of Students describing my life situation," Israel recalls, "He showed great insight and a good heart. From that point on the Open University totally supported me, giving me a full scholarship. But more than that, the staff and faculty were helpful and supportive in every way." Open University: A Worthwhile Investment No doubt this has been a 'worthwhile investment.' Israel is finishing up his undergraduate degree in psychology. For the past three years, he has consistently been on the President's Honor's List, having earned a 95 average in his psychology courses. Haifa University approached him and requested he submit his application to their master's program in clinical psychology. In the meantime, he receives offers for roles on television shows, and he continues to study, teach self-growth courses, and volunteer wherever he can. The future? "I hope to get a Ph.D. My goal is to do research, treat people and also write. I've changed worlds, largely thanks to the Open University and I hope to be able to change the worlds of other people, too." Page: 1 2
