The Dictionary
of Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century Dutch Philosophers is at once
an overview of Dutch philosophical development and a synoptic presentation of
early modern European thought at large. Furthermore, this Dictionary
contains material on many figures who were not in a
strict sense philosophers but who contributed otherwise to the
dissemination of philosophical ideas, such as publishers and journalists. Apart
from entries on persons, this dictionary is unique in that it includes
material on universities, illustrious schools and learned magazines. The
relatively late appearance of philosophical and scientific societies in the We are
