Delivering Excellence for All in Israel 41 The Open University Institute for the Study of Civil-Military Relations The institute was established in 2024 amidst the war in Gaza to advance the field of civil- military relations, create a comprehensive and ongoing foundation for research, and contribute critically to policy development. The institute draws on multidisciplinary expertise and focuses on key areas, including recruitment models, military doctrine, the military’s relationship with social groups, its interaction with political and legal systems and media, and the organizational culture of the military. The institute initiates research workshops that produce publications, policy- review workshops, and public conferences. Digital Humanities and Social Sciences Hub The rapid evolution of Digital Humanities and Social Sciences is transforming research methods, necessitating scholars to adopt new methodologies and embrace collaborative research over solitary work. The DHSS Hub supports this shift by fostering an environment where teams from Humanities, Social Sciences, and Computer Science integrate digital technologies into their research. We aim to enhance awareness of Digital Humanities and Social Sciences in academia and expand our community by involving both senior scholars as well as educating students on digital developments in the liberal arts. The DHSS Hub builds upon the legacy of the Open Media and Information Lab (OMILab), established by Prof. Oren Soffer (1971-2020), a pioneering researcher in media theory, media history, and digital communication. Oren’s visionary work, including his analysis of the nineteenth-century Jewish press with digital tools, continues to inspire our efforts. We honor his legacy by advancing multidisci- plinary research and strengthening the con- nection between research and teaching at the Open University.
